The Atari 2600 version

Released in 1983 for the Atari 2600, and developed by Coleco Industries, Inc., this version of Donkey Kong probably has some of the most interesting cover artwork seen in Mario history with its alternative take on Donkey Kong!

While this version had to make compromises due to the hardware limitations of the Atari 2600, it still managed to capture the essence of the original, letting players take control of Mario (then referred to as Jumpman) as he tried to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong.

A classic platformer at home

The gameplay in Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600 followed the same premise as the arcade version: players had to navigate various platforms while avoiding obstacles like barrels, fire, and the intimidating Donkey Kong. While the visuals were far simpler than the arcade version due to the Atari’s graphics capabilities, the core mechanics remained intact. Players climbed ladders, dodged barrels, and tried to reach the top to save Pauline, experiencing the thrills of the arcade classic in the comfort of their own home.

The home console adaptation of an arcade legend

Although it wasn’t a perfect replication of the arcade experience, the Atari 2600 version of Donkey Kong played a crucial role in expanding the reach of the game to a broader audience. As one of the first home console versions of the famous arcade title, it helped cement the game’s status as one of the most influential video games of all time. For retro gaming enthusiasts, this release represents an important chapter in the early days of home video gaming and the legacy of Donkey Kong.
