The Atari 2600 adaptation
Released in 1988 for the Atari 2600, Mario Bros. brought the beloved arcade platformer to the home console. Developed by Nintendo and published by Atari Corporation, this version of Mario Bros. aimed to capture the essence of the arcade classic but had to adapt to the limitations of the Atari 2600. The simplified graphics and gameplay still managed to deliver the familiar action of Mario and Luigi clearing pipes and defeating enemies, albeit in a more basic form compared to its arcade counterpart.
Classic Mario action, Atari-style
In the Atari 2600 version of Mario Bros., players controlled either Mario or Luigi, jumping over obstacles and flipping enemies on their backs to clear each stage. While the visual quality was notably simpler due to the Atari 2600’s hardware, the gameplay loop of defeating creatures like Shellcreepers and Sidesteppers, along with jumping over hazards, remained faithful to the original. The two-player mode was also included, allowing players to team up and clear levels together, making for a fun cooperative experience.
Bringing Mario to the Atari 2600
Although this version of Mario Bros. lacked the advanced graphics and sound effects found in later console ports, it was a significant step in bringing the Mario franchise to a broader audience. By adapting the game for the Atari 2600, Nintendo and Atari extended the reach of the Mario brand beyond Nintendo’s own systems, allowing even more gamers to experience the charm of Mario and Luigi’s platforming adventures. This adaptation remains an important piece of Mario’s history, representing an early effort to bring Mario’s world to a variety of platforms.
