A fresh take on a classic formula

New Super Mario Bros. is a platform video game developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. This UK PAL version of the game was first released in June 2006, one month after North America and Japan.

It is a part of the New Super Mario Bros. subseries of the Super Mario franchise, and follows Mario as he does his usual things and fights his way through Bowser’s henchmen to rescue Princess Peach.

New Super Mario Bros. was commercially successful having sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game for the Nintendo DS and one of the best-selling video games of all time. The game’s success led to a line of sequels released for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U.

Classic platforming with new features

New Super Mario Bros. featured the familiar mix of jumping, running, and power-ups, but it introduced exciting new elements, such as the Mini Mushroom and the powerful Mega Mushroom, which changed the dynamics of gameplay. The game also included smooth, fluid animations and colourful 2D environments, which helped bring the classic Mario formula into the 21st century. The inclusion of innovative level design and hidden secrets added depth to the overall experience.

Multiplayer and replayability

While the game was primarily a single-player adventure, New Super Mario Bros. included a multiplayer mode in the form of mini-games that could be played with friends via local wireless play. With its engaging levels, tight controls, and replayable content, the game became an instant hit for both long-time Mario fans and newcomers, cementing itself as one of the must-have titles for the Nintendo DS.
