Mario Bros. brings arcade action to the FamicomBox
The Mario Bros. (FamicomBox kiosk version) delivered classic two-player arcade gameplay to public venues in 1986. As part of the FamicomBox system—a special kiosk used in hotels and stores—this version allowed players to experience Mario and Luigi’s early plumbing adventures without needing to own the cartridge.
Classic co-op chaos
Like the standard home release, this version of Mario Bros. featured fast-paced platforming where players knocked enemies off platforms before finishing them with a well-timed kick. Cooperation (or competition) between Mario and Luigi added to the fun, making it one of the earliest true multiplayer experiences on Nintendo’s home consoles.
A rare piece of Nintendo history
Unlike retail copies, FamicomBox versions were never sold directly to consumers, making them an interesting collector’s item today. The kiosk-exclusive cartridge, with its unique label and reverse-side markings, stands as a reminder of Nintendo’s creative marketing strategies during the Famicom era.
