A karting classic with a twist
Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U brought the high-speed karting action the series is known for to a new level. Released in 2014, the game introduced fantastic visuals, smooth gameplay, and exciting new mechanics, making it a standout title for the console. The addition of anti-gravity racing was a game-changer, allowing players to race on walls and ceilings, adding a new dimension to the familiar tracks. This feature not only looked great but also provided fresh strategies, with players using boosts and stunts while racing in gravity-defying sections.
A rich roster and iconic tracks
As expected from the Mario Kart series, Mario Kart 8 offered a wide selection of beloved characters. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and others were joined by newcomers such as Link from The Legend of Zelda and the villagers from Animal Crossing. The game also featured returning tracks from previous games, such as Rainbow Road and Mount Wario, alongside new creative designs. Whether you were drifting through city streets or racing through ancient ruins, the course variety kept things exciting and engaging, making each race feel fresh.
Online multiplayer and the perfect party game
Another feature that set Mario Kart 8 apart was its online multiplayer. With an improved online experience, players could race against friends or random opponents from around the world. The ability to play with friends in both local and online multiplayer modes made it an excellent party game. Add in the option for customisable karts and an in-depth points system for rankings, and it’s easy to see why Mario Kart 8 quickly became a fan-favourite and a highlight of the Wii U’s library.
