A bright new adventure
Released in 2002, Super Mario Sunshine brought Mario to the GameCube, ushering in a fresh chapter in the Mario series. Set on the tropical Isle Delphino, the game introduced players to a bright, sunny world filled with new mechanics, including the iconic FLUDD (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device). Mario was tasked with cleaning up the island, which had been tarnished by mysterious graffiti, adding a unique twist to the familiar platforming formula.
A focus on exploration and puzzle-solving
In Super Mario Sunshine, exploration played a key role. The game encouraged players to explore vast, open environments and solve environmental puzzles using FLUDD, which could shoot water to clean surfaces or propel Mario through the air. The open-world design was complemented by a series of creative levels, from lush beaches to perilous rooftops, offering a refreshing break from traditional linear Mario adventures. The island atmosphere, paired with a catchy soundtrack, helped to create a lively and immersive experience.
A polarising yet memorable entry
While Super Mario Sunshine remains a beloved title for many, it has also been a divisive one within the Mario fanbase. Some players appreciated the departure from the usual Super Mario gameplay, while others felt the emphasis on water-based mechanics took away from the classic platforming elements. Regardless of opinions, Super Mario Sunshine left a lasting impact on the series, contributing to Mario’s successful transition into 3D and continuing to stand out as a unique and colourful GameCube classic.
