A challenging spin-off
New Super Luigi U was released as a downloadable content (DLC) for New Super Mario Bros. U in 2013, offering a fresh challenge for players. Featuring Luigi as the main protagonist, it changed the gameplay by tweaking the mechanics and adding increased difficulty. The game was designed to be harder than its predecessor, with tighter time limits, tricky level designs, and a greater focus on precision. Luigi’s higher jumps and unique physics added a distinct feel to the platforming experience, making it a standout challenge for seasoned players.
Shorter levels, tougher stakes
One of the most noticeable differences was the shorter level design. Each stage had a stricter time limit of 100 seconds, requiring players to think quickly and make precise moves. This increased pressure created a faster-paced, more frantic experience. Some levels even featured added environmental challenges, such as strong winds or disappearing platforms, ramping up the intensity.
Expanding the world of Mario
Though it was a side entry to the mainline series, New Super Luigi U still featured plenty of the charm and colourful visuals fans had come to expect. It retained the vibrant art style of New Super Mario Bros. U while introducing new environments and fresh enemies. The game was also released as a standalone title for the Wii U, making it accessible for those who didn’t own the original New Super Mario Bros. U. Despite being a DLC, it provided enough content to stand on its own and was well received by fans looking for a more difficult Mario platforming experience.
