Bowser Party: A fresh twist on the formula
Mario Party 10 was released for the Wii U in 2015 and continued the series’ signature formula of colourful boards, quirky mini-games, and plenty of competitive fun. However, it introduced a few changes to keep things fresh. One of the most noticeable shifts was the inclusion of the Bowser Party mode, where one player takes on the role of Bowser while the other players try to work together to defeat him. This mode added an interesting twist to the traditional Mario Party gameplay, as the Bowser player could use their unique powers to hinder the other players’ progress, creating a dynamic of tension and excitement. It was a bold departure from the traditional “everyone vs. the game” format, offering an engaging alternative to the usual party board game.
The car ride: A new way to move around
In Mario Party 10, players moved around the board in a car, as opposed to individual tokens like in most earlier titles. While this change may have been designed to streamline gameplay, it had mixed reactions from fans. Some appreciated the shift, as it made turns quicker and kept the action moving, while others felt it reduced some of the strategic depth that comes with moving individually. The use of the Wii U GamePad also introduced some interesting new mechanics. Players could interact with the board in different ways by using the touch screen, adding another layer of interactivity to the proceedings.
Mini-games galore: Fun for everyone
The game’s mini-games were as fun and varied as ever, making use of the Wii U’s unique capabilities. From racing and puzzle-solving to motion-based games, there was something for everyone, and the action was as fast-paced and chaotic as you’d expect from a Mario Party title. The overall visual style remained bright and cheery, with characters in their usual cartoony forms. While the game didn’t drastically reinvent the series, it did offer enough fresh features to keep things entertaining. Mario Party 10 may not be the definitive Mario Party experience for everyone, but it’s a solid entry that brings a lot of fun, especially when playing with friends.
