A portable classic reimagined
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color, released in 1999, brought the iconic NES classic to the palm of your hand with a few modern tweaks. It faithfully recreated the original Super Mario Bros. with updated visuals and added features, providing an opportunity for a new generation of players to experience Mario’s first adventure. The game included all eight worlds, the challenging platforming, and the iconic power-ups, while offering new elements like a screenshot feature to help players track their progress.
Extras and challenges for replayability
Beyond the core game, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe introduced several new features to keep players engaged. The game included additional challenges, like collecting all the coins in each level, as well as the “Mario Bros. Game” mode, which allowed players to play the original arcade version of Mario Bros.. The inclusion of a time trial mode and secret areas added an extra layer of replayability, enticing players to revisit levels and complete all the challenges.
A perfect fit for the Game Boy Color
The transition to the Game Boy Color was smooth, with the title maintaining its charming 8-bit aesthetic, but with enhanced colours and crisp visuals. The controls felt tight, and the game ran smoothly, providing a nostalgic yet fresh experience. With Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Nintendo ensured that even on a handheld system, players could enjoy the magic of Mario’s first adventure anytime, anywhere, making it a standout title for the Game Boy Color.
