Bringing the arcade classic to the Commodore 64/128
Released in 1983 for the Commodore 64/128, Donkey Kong was brought to home computers via cartridge, allowing players to experience the iconic arcade platformer in their own homes. Developed by Nintendo and published by Atari Corporation, this version of the game captured the fast-paced platforming action of the arcade, with players taking control of Mario as he navigated through levels filled with barrels, fire, and other hazards to rescue Pauline from the clutches of Donkey Kong.
A faithful, yet simplified experience
While the core gameplay of Donkey Kong remained intact, the Commodore 64/128 cartridge version featured simplified graphics and sound compared to the arcade original. Despite these limitations, the game still presented the same core challenges: dodging barrels, climbing ladders, and jumping over fire hazards across the different levels. The cartridge format allowed for quicker loading times and a more stable gaming experience compared to earlier cassette versions, making this port an enjoyable way to play the classic arcade game at home.
A key moment for Donkey Kong on home consoles
The 1983 release of Donkey Kong on the Commodore 64/128 was an important step in bringing arcade games into the home computing market. It provided players with the chance to enjoy one of the most iconic platformers of the early 1980s on their personal computers, paving the way for future home console ports. The Commodore 64/128 cartridge version remains a nostalgic piece of gaming history, offering a glimpse into how home gaming was evolving during the early days of computer gaming.
“In this game hall classic by Nintendo you play Mario, who worked as a carpenter at the time of the release of the machine (1981) (he became a plumber only in the manual for “Mario Bros”). Donkey Kong has kidnapped your girlfriend Pauline, which he keeps captured on a scaffold. In the first level Donkey Kong throws barrels after you. You need to jump over them or smash them with the famous hammer. Shortly before Mario reaches his girlfriend, Donkey Kong grabs the beloved and climbs upwards with her. In the second part Mario can bring about the monkey’s downfall and through this rescue his beloved. The first stage is done!”
